At Claro we can support you to increase your social and community participation, whilst building skills and capacity for independent living. We aim to partner you with like-minded support workers so that you can build connections in your community, learn a new skill, participation in recreational activities or learn a new hobby.
Community Participation typically refers to NDIS funding that helps people with disability join recreational, social and educational activities to build skills, confidence and connections.
The support can cover a worker accompanying you to outings, classes, sports or volunteer commitments when these align with the goals in your NDIS plan.
This funding sits separately from Supported Independent Living or Specialist Disability Accommodation and is not intended for your day-to-day personal needs or accommodation expenses.
The goal of Community Participation funding is to help you actively engage in your community and foster independence, inclusion and personal growth.
It goes beyond paying for entertainment. It is intended to help you build relationships, skills and confidence.
Community Participation is highly individual and based on your personal goals and interests. It can fall under either Core Supports or Capacity Building Supports.
When your goals are clearly outlined in your NDIS plan you may be eligible for funding to take part in activities such as:
Funding remains flexible when it directly supports your goals, so it is worth discussing those goals with your support network to get the most from your plan.
We take a personalised approach to matching you with Community Participation supports that reflect your goals, preferences and lifestyle.

Both funding areas are designed to help you build your skills and enjoy your life, but each has a particular focus. Core Supports fund more of the day to day activities – exploring your community, participating in events, attending matches from your most loved sports team etc. Capacity Building Supports are designed to develop your skills and independence – think things like workshops and courses, volunteering, resume development and interview skills. It really comes down to your goals – if one of your goals is to overcome shyness and isolation, then group social activities could be considered a Capacity Building support.
The first step is to speak to your Local Area Coordinator or Support Coordinator to discuss your goals and what support you might need to achieve them. Your support requests will need to align to your goals and be considered “reasonable and necessary” for your health and wellbeing. And remember to be specific : your funding supports your participation in the community, not just general costs of recreation.
Supports must relate to your disability, demonstrate value for money, be effective at helping you achieve your goals, and not be used to cover daily living costs like groceries or things covered by the health or education system.
