At Claro, we are here to support you achieve your goals, offering a range of aged care and disability support services. Kerrie Sculac is no exception, commencing support with Claro in 2017 – since then Kerrie has continued to exceed her initial goals and continues to grow.

Currently living with secondary progressive MS (Multiple Sclerosis), Kerrie came to Claro experiencing depression following past experiences. Through receiving personalised care and support, Kerrie was able to find her happiness again and discovered a love for the arts through the encouragement of her support workers, growing to excel in writing, mouth painting and poetry.

Kerrie recently co-authored a book about her experiences living with MS, ‘Whispers of Resilience: Our Stories of Multiple Sclerosis’. The book launch featured a panel with all contributing authors interviewed by Justine Martin, which Kerrie notes was a very surreal and proud moment for her. This introduced her into the world of publishing, igniting her to start developing her own book which she plans to release in September 2024.

The biggest challenges Kerrie faces in her everyday life and career are mobility issues and being unable to walk around in her own house or go outside. Kerrie requires physical assistance to mobilise, and is appreciative of the support she receives, which allows her maintain her independence and be productive in all aspects of her life.

As Kerrie’s career progresses, she is grateful for technology becoming more accessible for those living with disabilities. AI and digital media are often portrayed in a negative light, but for someone like Kerrie who is unable to use her arms or fingers, voice control is essential for her to create content. Kerrie has also recently taken up mouth painting, in which a chin cup and brush have been developed to assist her in her creative output and independence.

About Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. The body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and damages the fatty material – called myelin – around the nerves. As the myelin breaks down during an MS attack, patches of nerves become exposed and then scarred, which renders the nerves unable to communicate messages properly and at risk of subsequent degeneration. This means that the brain cannot talk to other parts of the body, resulting in a range of symptoms that can include a loss of motor function and difficulties communicating.
