Claro offers specialised training for Senior Support Workers

As specialists in providing care to individuals requiring complex disability support, Claro Aged Care and Disability Services offers ongoing training and development opportunities for our support workers to ensure delivery of person-centred care to our valued clients.

Our Senior Support Workers have been hand-selected to participate in a custom training program which focuses on frontline practice leadership and empowers them to support staff to develop their skills and improve how they deliver direct supports.

“Our Senior Support Workers are chosen to participate in training that furthers their professional development and enhances their skills in delivering person-centred care to our clients.”

Shannon Garrett, Claro State Manager

Claro’s Senior Support Workers have shown themselves to be client-focused, reliable and punctual, while demonstrating initiative and ability to role model best practice to other team members. The hold formal qualifications, usually a Certificate IV or Advanced Diploma in a relevant field, and have multiple years’ experience providing complex disability supports. They generally split their time between providing direct care, and management tasks including supervision, shift planning, ensuring policies and procedures are followed and documentation.

The Senior Support Worker training comprises two days theoretical training and development. Day 1 focuses on frontline practice leadership across the areas of task allocation, feedback and coaching, quality of life, supervision, and facilitating teamwork. Day 2 focuses on building an understanding of support functions including Clinical Practice, Quality, Risk, Workplace Health & Safety and Workforce Management.

“We’re keen to recognise our top performing team members and celebrate their development by offering a clear pathway and the support necessary for them to become an effective Senior Support Worker”

Shannon Garrett, Claro State Manager

A key focus of the senior support worker training is quality of life of people living with disability and how support workers can support across the eight domains of life. Quality of life looks different for everyone we care for, and understanding individual preferences enables delivery of services that support their quality of life.

Senior support workers offer supervision, feedback, guidance and demonstration that enables our care team to deliver services that enhance quality of life for all our clients.

“Although I’ve worked in the industry for more than 15 years, this training really changed my perspective on how to work effectively with clients and with our staff. The way that we approach a task or person, the words we use and our body language have a real impact on the way people respond.”

Daljit Kaur, Claro Senior Support Worker

The senior support worker training also addresses myths about providing services for individuals living with disability that may exist because of personal or cultural beliefs or underestimation of an individual’s potential to be engaged or experience quality of life.

When asked what it’s like working as a Senior Support Worker at Claro, Daljit says, “If you work hard and are committed there are opportunities for you to progress your career at Claro. The state managers, area manager and our accommodation services managers are incredibly approachable, if you need support they are there for you to answer questions and help you find solutions”.
