Australian Government increases available Home Care Packages for older Australians
More than ever people are wanting to stay in their homes as they age. The comfort of a familiar environment, and the appeal of freedom and flexibility make this an attractive option for many. This is especially true for many older Australians who are side-stepping nursing homes or residential aged care facilities and accessing in-home care so they can stay in their home.
Remaining at home is possible, but it’s important to have access to the care and support services needed to live safely and independently.
So, how do you access in-home care and support?
Home Care Packages are provided by the Commonwealth Government and provide funding to enable ageing Australians access to care and support services that allow them to remain in their own homes.
With around 300,000 individuals already accessing Home Care Packages many are already achieving their goal of ageing in place, while being supported with care and domestic tasks that have become more difficult with age.
But there are more than 50,000 older Australians who have been waiting upwards of 12 months to access funding that would enable them access to in-home care and support services. This number is only exponentially rising with demand far exceeding supply.
To try and combat this the Government is investing approximately $531 million dollars to support the release of 24,000 Home Care Packages over the 2024/2025 financial year. The aim of this is to reduce the wait times for Home Care Packages and expedite availability of funding to facilitate access to necessary and possibly life sustaining support services.
Access to these packages will be invaluable to older Australians who are passionate about remaining in their own homes. Supporting older Australians to remain in their own homes not only creates a positive impact on overall physical health, but also positively impacts psychological health and wellbeing leading to an overall improved quality of life.
